P-BANK

Find us by looking for a toilet – leave as a proud P Donor

Today’s agriculture depends on industrial fertilizers containing P, Phosphorus. This non-renewable is currently still obtained from mined Phosphate Rock which is depleting quickly. To secure our future food supplies we need to start to recover P now.

The P-BANK is a public toilet that aims to close the P-cycle. The sanitation system separates Pee from the waste water which simplifies nutrient recovery. This happens directly in the P-BANK. The recovered P is re-used as fertilizer in the P-BANK garden.

COLLECT

In the donor rooms you can comfortably donate in a no-mix toilet or a waterless urinal.

RECOVER

While washing hands, you can peek into the recovery lab. A process of chemical reactions recovers P from Pee safely and hygienically.

RE-USE

Leaving the P-Bank you’ll discover that the recovered P can be successfully reused as an alternative for mined Phosphorus.

However, there will always be room for the obscure, the misnamed, and the accidental. The very randomness of gives it a certain mystique—a digital wildness that curated feeds cannot replicate.

Even mundane old files can gain a "creepy" or nostalgic reputation when their context is lost, making them popular in "unsolved internet mystery" discussions [1].

Reddit communities, Discord servers, and digital archivists constantly scour the web for unlisted or newly uploaded assets. A file labeled "start214720.mp4" might contain anything from a lost trailer for an upcoming movie to an unreleased music video. Algorithmic Amplification

The first part of the string, "start," speaks to the fundamental shift in user agency. In the era of broadcast television and theatrical film, the audience did not decide when a story began. Media was a destination with a timetable. Today, the "start" button is the most powerful tool in the entertainment arsenal. Streaming platforms like Netflix, YouTube, and TikTok have handed the remote control to the user, but with a critical twist. While we can "start" any .mp4 file at any moment, the algorithm often dictates which file we see. The "start" is now a reaction to predictive analytics, suggesting that our sense of control is partially an illusion. Popular media no longer commands a shared, national "appointment viewing" moment; instead, it offers a personalized, asynchronous "start" that fragments the audience into millions of individual viewing silos.

Communities like the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) subreddits or the "Star Wars Leaks" forums dissect any leaked MP4. A filename including "start214720" would be analyzed for hidden clues—frame rates, aspect ratios, metadata—to determine whether it is a genuine leak or a sophisticated fake.

The digital media landscape expands by exabytes every single day. Within this massive sea of data, specific file naming conventions, obscure digital artifacts, and leaked broadcast fragments frequently capture the internet's imagination. The keyword string highlights a fascinating intersection in modern culture. It represents how raw digital video files transition from cold server storage into vibrant pieces of popular media.

PROJECT

In 2018 the Bauhaus University Weimar and WERKHAUS destinature received funding from the German Federal Environment Foundation (DBU) to develop the first P-BANK. The concept was developed by Anniek Vetter and Sylvia Debit during a semester project at the Bauhaus University Weimar led by Prof. Jörg Londong back in to 2013.
The P-BANK was first used for several months during the 100th anniversary year of Bauhaus in Weimar, Germany 2019. Later that year the P-BANK was at the Tiny Living Festival. The project was presented at the Antenna platform during the Dutch Design Week 2019.
WERKHAUS destinature built the mobile P-Bank from sustainable materials, based on the service and communication designed by Debit and Vetter, including donor-rooms containing the toilet safe! sponsored by Laufen. The recovering system is developed by the B.is, the department of urban water management and sanitation of the Bauhaus University Weimar led by Prof. Jörg Londong, with the support of Vuna and Eawag. Besides consulting Goldeimer supports getting the story and the out there!
