From 1979 to 1984, Kamalov studied at the Department of Chinese Studies in the Faculty of Oriental Studies at Tashkent State University (now the National University of Uzbekistan), graduating with honors. His passion for academic research then led him to the Leningrad Branch of the Institute of Oriental Studies at the USSR Academy of Sciences (today the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences), where he studied from 1985 to 1989. Kamalov’s professional career began in 1984 as an assistant in the Sector of Uyghur Studies at the Institute of Linguistics of the Kazakh Academy of Sciences. After completing his PhD, he returned to the newly established Institute of Uyghur Studies, where he rose through the ranks from Junior and Senior Research Fellow to Head of the Department of History and Source Studies. When the Institute of Uyghur Studies was reorganized into the Institute of Oriental Studies in 1986, he continued his work at its Center for Uyghur Studies, eventually holding the position of Chief Research Fellow.
